As a wedding photographer that offers a personalized boutique experience to my clients, I stress the importance of getting to know my clients on a slightly more personal level before the wedding day. Wedding photography is an intimate art form and I feel that I deliver the best results to my clients when I sense that we have a shared interest in one another. One way that I do this is by offering them a complimentary engagement session where we get the opportunity to get to know one another a little better; I catch a glimpse of how the couple interacts together and they receive a preview of the quality of my work before the big day. When my clients feel comfortable with me, they are more inclined to let their guard down and act naturally as they would with close family and friends. Once this relationship is built between us, my clients tend to act more sincere and emotional in front of me and my camera.
• Pick a location that is special to you both. Your engagement photos are most likely the first professional images that you have taken together over the course of your relationship so pick a location that is special to you both: somewhere you went on a special date, where you met for the first time or where he proposed are good places to start. (example – this couple met their freshman year at Monmouth University so they wanted to go back to campus for their engagement pictures)
• Coordinate clothing and dress in season. The trick to picking your wardrobe for an engagement session is to pick colors that coordinate well together and go well with the season you are taking the pictures in. By picking colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel, you will avoid looking excessively coordinated (example – spring engagement session – The bride wore a vibrant dress featuring vibrant spring colors and the grooms gray pants matched the colors in her dress.
• Incorporate a hobby or prop. You can personalize your pictures by including things that you both like or embracing your differences. Remember every couple has a different dynamic so these images usually stand out form the rest. I have photographed couples that like to read but she likes to read novels and he likes to read comic books. (example – The couple mentioned above, they both like reading and wanted their pictures taken in Asbury Park. I took this picture in front of Convention Hall, where the annual Comicon (comic book convention) is held.)
• Include the rest of the family. Many couples already have a family pet during their engagement and if you are a pet lover, you will probably not want to leave out your additional family member. I usually suggest starting or ending the session with the family pet so we also have time to focus on you both as a couple. I recommend asking someone to watch your pet for the duration of the session. (example- Mickey the beagle with his owners)
• Be yourself, relax and have fun. Getting your picture taken does not have to be this uneventful, boring chore. Find a photographer that you enjoy talking to and they will make you feel at ease, walk you through looking and feeling your best and your genuine reactions will come effortlessly. (example- this couple decided to take their engagement pictures at an arcade and I told them just to have fun and not pay any attention to me)
